Like every fall, I must go apple picking. It is one of my favorite things to do. Especially coming home with a huge bag full of a variety of apples.
Apple crumble is one of my all time favorite fall desserts. The crumble is buttery and sweet and the apples still stay somewhat firm.
Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and it’s perfection.
Oh, and it must be served warm. This recipe is really easy and can be prepared a day in advanced. Just let it hang out in the refrigerator and bake it off the next day.
This recipe will make a 9×13 inch dish.
For the apples:
8 each: Apples (I like to use Golden Delicious. Sometimes I use a variety of Golden Delicious with Granny Smith). Peeled, cored and cut into chunks.
2 teaspoons: Cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon: Nutmeg
1/2 Cup: Brown Sugar
3 Tablespoons: Flour
Juice of 1 orange
4 Tablespoons: Unsalted Butter, cut into cubes (reserve the other 4 Tablespoons)
3) Spread out the cubes of butter on top of the apples. Now make the crumble topping.
1 Cup: Flour
1 Cup: Brown Sugar
1 Cup: Oats
1 teaspoon: Cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon: Nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon: Cloves
1/2 Cup: Chopped Walnuts (optional)
1 Stick + 4 Tablespoons (that were reserved): Unsalted Butter, cubed
1) In a bowl, combine all the ingredients, except the butter & walnuts. Mix with your hands.
2) Add the cubed butter and mix with your hands until the mixture begins to come together and looks crumbly. Gently toss in the walnuts.
5) Please, serve this warm with ice cream!!
The apple mixture creates a beautiful cinnamon syrup that is incredible. That is why the flour is added. Also, while it is baking, it will make your house smell like an apple pie candle.
By the way, this crumb topping recipe can be used on top of pies or muffins. It’s really the best part!
Basically, this is to die for!! Everyone who I have made this for has loved it. It is a real crowd pleaser and so easy to prepare.
